Worldwide Young BPW International

Hello ladies,

My name is Anastasia Victoria Safarian and I am your newly elected Young BPW International Representative.

I am 25 years old (almost 26, but who’s counting) and I was born in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.   At the age of 16, I moved to New Jersey in the United States and at the age of 21 I decided to try my luck in Rome, Italy. Traveling around the United States, Europe, Asia and Africa allowed me to better understand myself and learn about the world around me.  I have been to 27 countries and I presently speak fluent Russian, English and Italian.  I intend to study and become proficient in a few more languages so that I may better pursue my goals to become an International Peace Liaison.

I joined BPW back in 2007 with encouragement of a close family friend, Barbara Howie, who currently serves as a President for Enterprising and Professional Women (EPW) - New York.  Barbara helped me to see the networking opportunities this organization provides and helped me realize that BPW creates a bridge which connects a woman's world with the business world.  My learning and experiences in BPW have helped shape me into who I am today.  I became more aware of the needs women around the world still have and the problems we still face today.

I would like to share my knowledge and experiences by being a mentor to other young women around the world.   My aim is to inspire other young women to become leaders in their communities and in the business world by encouraging personal development and leadership skills through BPW membership opportunities.   I will be the voice of Young BPW and encourage more international participation, allowing a fresh and innovative exchange of ideas, projects, and strategies as well as highlight professional and personal accomplishments of our members.

Young BPW are all BPW members up to the age of 35. Usually we are members in our hometown Clubs, and enjoy the local and national program. Additionally we meet on our own. Most often we form Young BPW Teams in our Clubs or Federations and Associations – most preferably we don’t form a Club on our own (which would mean to have a load of Business Administration ;-) We are just like Mother and Daughter, learn from each other and take profit from each other.

What are Young BPWs doing?

These Young BPW Teams unite a great power and they often offer an additional program on local, national and international level. We organise theme-focused workshops and training seminars on e.g. Negotiation Skills, Meetings with Senior Managers as Role Models, forums on national and international issues, symposiums, and local Young BPW get-togethers. The big target is to encourage the exchange of ideas and information.

On the personal level, we share our professional experiences and expertise with one another, make business and private contacts, and advise one another on questions of career and personal development. We as Young Business and Professional Women support each other to have equal access to career and business development as well as on the personal development.

The Reason for having Young BPW within BPW

It is a very simple reason: Young BPW are the younger members with a focus of interest in the planning and running a career, in combining family and career. And they often prefer a less formal meeting style. The integration within a local Club is essential not to split up between old and young BPW.

Why we must continue to work towards common goals?

We want to raise awareness of the historically high level of women's qualifications, and the work that they have achieved. We want to obtain equal opportunities for the advancement for women in the economy, politics, and all other organisations. We want to "break through the Glass Ceiling"!

Furthermore, we want to make personal development, especially in professional life, possible for all.

Young BPW and BPW International also work on a political level: Through the organisation, we influence political decisions via various UN committees (e.g. CSW, UNESCO, UNIFEM, WHO) as well as through the European Women´s Lobby (EWL).

Young BPW activities

Young BPW from all over the world visit the annual Commission on the Status of Women CSW in New York, and helping to lobby women’s rights.

Every three years we organise a Young BPW Conference for all which is a great networking and learning opportunity for our members from across the globe! Not only do Young women get to learn from sharing of mutual experiences, but also life long friendships are formed!

Congratulations to Aminata Sidibe, Young BPW Bamako (Mali) Representative on receiving the Yvonne Hebert Funding for her work in a Least Developed Country. This is great news indeed!

The Young BPW Committee to represent all 5 regions is complete as I welcome June Pok to serve as the Young BPW Asia Pacific Representative. Warm congratulations to Miette, Mauryn, Courtney, Sofia and June on their regional positions as Young BPW Representatives. I am truly honoured to work closely with such talented and accomplished young women. I truly believe that together with their respective Regional Coordinators they will make a wonderful team. I kindly ask all National Presidents to encourage their Young Representatives to get to know and be in touch with their respective Young BPW Regional Representatives. Young BPW members are the FUTURE of BPW International, let us build this FUTURE together!

I am personally very excited to welcome and meet young members from around the world at the Young BPW International Congress. The Congress will be held together with BPW European Congress in Sorrento, Italy from September 28 to September 30,  2012. I kindly request all Presidents to spread the good news and support Young BPWs attendance. The weekend will focus to address Women Empowerment Principle number 4 'Promote education, training and professional development for women' through Leadership training under the theme of  'Empowering Young to be Future Leaders'. Start planning your trip to Italy and be prepared to learn, network and make new friends.
If you have any questions, would you like to sponsor a Young BPW member to attend the Congress, lead a workshop or simply interested to learn more, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Happy 2012 to all!
